5. Transliteration of Arabic and Persian Words and Names

For transliteration, follow the guidelines set by the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES). Ensure consistency and accuracy in representing non-Latin script terms.

General Rules:

  • Arabic Letters and Sounds:
    • Consistently transliterate consonants and vowels.
    • Use diacritics to distinguish different sounds and letters.
    • Indicate long vowels (ā, ī, ū) with a macron.
    • Properly represent Hamza (ʾ) and ʿayn (ʿ).
  • Persian Specifics:
    • Follow the same rules for long vowels and diacritics as in Arabic.
    • Pay attention to Persian-specific letters: پ (p), چ (ch), ژ (zh), and گ (g).
  • Capitalization:
    • Capitalize proper nouns.
    • Do not capitalize the definite article (al-) unless it begins a sentence.
  • Names:
    • Fully transliterate Arabic and Persian names.
    • Use lowercase and hyphens for the definite article (al-) in names (e.g., al-Rahman).
  • Consistency:
    • Maintain consistent transliteration throughout the manuscript.
    • Refer to the IJMES Transliteration Chart for detailed guidelines.

Examples:

Arabic:

  • قرأن (Qurʾān)
  • سنة (Sunna)
  • حدیث (Ḥadīth)
  • إجماع (Ijmāʿ)

Persian:

  • کتاب (Kitāb)
  • خانه (Khānih)
  • گل (Gul)
  • چای (Chāy)

Reference List Examples:

  • al-Ghazālī, Abū Ḥāmid. Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn. Cairo: al-Maktabah al-Tawfīqiyya, 1967.
  • Ṣadr, Muḥammad Bāqir. Iqtisādunā. Beirut: Dār al-Taʿāruf, 1982.

Note: When names include "al-" (such as al-Ghazali), maintain "al-" with a lowercase "a". However, in the alphabetical ordering of the reference list, place the name according to the letter following "al-".

Note: Transliterate names, work titles, and publishers into Arabic or Persian as appropriate. For contemporary authors, you may use their names in English according to their preferences or customary usage. When citing publishers, an English translation is acceptable only if the publisher has an official English title that can be referenced.
